Sex therapy is a specialty in the field of psychotherapy which focuses on addressing specific sexual concerns such as:

  • low sexual desire or unequal interest in sex between partners
  • sexual arousal issues
  • performance concerns
  • inability or difficulty with orgasm
  • pain during sex
  • exploration of sexual identity 


Sex therapists are first trained as Marriage and Family Therapists. After gaining licensure, they are able to begin completing extensive coursework and undergo supervision in order to become certified in sex therapy.


I am currently completing my AASECT (American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists) Sex Therapy Certification. I undergo monthly supervision and discuss cases with no identifying information. 


Sex therapy begins with a thorough assessment of your concerns which includes asking questions about your personal, physical, and sexual history. 


For many couples, therapy begins with regular couples therapy treatment such as improving communication. From there, sex therapy can focus on implementing strategies to practice safer forms of pleasure, increasing sexual empathy between partners, or even improving one's ability to vocalize their sexual needs. 


Sex therapy does not involve any sexual relationship with therapist and client(s) or live demonstrations. 


This is common. Starting individual therapy is still a very helpful start. In this set up, sessions can help you gain more insight on your triggers, responses to your partner, and practice effective ways to ask for what you need.


Effective therapy requires starting with once a week sessions. This cadence allows us to build our own relationship and creates more comfort for the process. We will have on-going check in's on progress and goals which can adjust the frequency of sessions.


Therapy generally works best when clients are willing to share and be open to their experiences.
